Tips for Brewing Coffee at Home - Bullet Points

Posted on September 07 2023, By: Tim Wacker

Brewing good coffee at home is simple and requires minimal effort. Here are the basics you can do to improve your cup of coffee. I plan on going into more detail on each of these in the future.
  • Use filtered water.
  • Use whole bean coffee within 3 days to 3 weeks from the roast date.
  • Store coffee away from heat, air, and light but not in the fridge or freezer.
  • Weigh the coffee. Do not use a measuring scoop.
  • Use a ratio of 1 gram of coffee to 17 grams of water.
  • Grind right before brewing with a burr grinder.
  • Grind size is determined by the coffee-to-water contact time. Grind size increases as time increases.
  • The water temperature should be 200°F ± 5°.
  • To correct weak or sour coffee, increase the amount of coffee, use a finer grind, increase the brewing temp, or increase brew time.
  • To correct strong or bitter coffee, decrease the amount of coffee, use a coarser grind, decrease the brewing temp, or decrease brew time.

Great information. It’s so helpful to have the remedies when it doesn’t come out like I want. Thank you Tim.
