Hario Switch Brewing Guide

Hario Switch Brewing Guide

Posted on March 17 2026, By: Tim Wacker

The Hario Switch, like the Clever Dripper, merges pour-over clarity with immersion ease. It excels at producing a clean, balanced cup with little effort.

The only drawback is its smaller capacity.

What You Need

  • Hario Switch, size 02
  • Hario V60 paper filters, size 02
  • Coffee: 15 g medium grind (table salt consistency)
  • Water: 240 g at 204°F (30 seconds off boil)
  • Burr grinder
  • Gooseneck kettle
  • Digital scale
  • Stirring utensil
  • Timer
  • Mug

Step-by-Step Method

  1. Heat your water. Bring water to 204°F (wait 30 seconds off boil).
  2. Weigh and grind your coffee. Weigh 15 grams of coffee and grind to a medium (table salt) consistency.
  3. Prepare the filter. Fold the edges of the filter, place it in the Switch, and set it on a mug. With the valve open, rinse thoroughly with hot water to remove paper taste and preheat the brewer and mug. Discard rinse water and reheat the brewing water as needed.
  4. Add the coffee. Add the coffee to the filter. Gently shake to level the bed.
  5. Start the brew. Place the Switch and mug on the scale, tare, start your timer, and pour all 240 grams of water at 204°F in a slow, circular motion.
  6. Stir. Stir to fully saturate the grounds and break up any clumps.
  7. Steep. Place a lid on top (optional) and let it steep undisturbed for 3:30 min.
  8. Drink up. Give the Switch a swirl and open the valve to drain. When the drawdown finishes (1-2 minutes), swirl the coffee in the mug and enjoy.

Why This Recipe Works

The Hario Switch uses full immersion for even extraction and rich body, then releases through a paper filter for clarity and cleanliness. The built-in valve gives you precise control over steep time without needing a perfect pour technique. It combines the forgiveness of immersion brewing with the refinement of pour-over, making repeatable excellence effortless.

Dialing In and Troubleshooting Your Brew

Change only one variable at a time to see its effects. Adjust grind, coffee amount, water temperature, or steep time as needed. Use the table to guide adjustments.

Desired Outcome / Issue Likely Cause / Adjustment Recommended Fix / Starting Point
Stronger, more full-bodied Finer grind or longer steep Finer grind or 4:00 steep
Brighter, cleaner profile Coarser grind or shorter steep Coarser grind or 3:00 steep
Sour or under-extracted / Sour or weak Grind too coarse, steep too short, or water too cool Finer grind, extend steep, or raise to 206°F
Bitter or over-extracted / Bitter or harsh Grind too fine, steep too long, or water too hot Coarser grind, shorten steep, or drop to 202°F
Drawdown too fast Grind too coarse Use a finer grind
Drawdown too slow or clogs Grind too fine or over-agitation Coarsen grind or stir less vigorously
